Grand Ideas for Intergenerational Programs
How can you make Grandparents Day a little grander this year? Plan and coordinate intergenerational activism projects. Create opportunities for older adults and youth in your community to come together, learn about important civic values and then reach out to policymakers and the media to make a grand difference for all children and youth in your community, state, or even nationwide.
Do Something Grand
Do you already have a group of younger and older people participating in intergenerational activities? If so, here are some ideas around intergenerational activism you can use in your programs and please be sure to share with Generations United what you do!
Are you not working with an intergenerational program, but want to get one started? Grandparents Day is a grand opportunity to build intergenerational connections in your community. Our Grandparents Day Take Action Guide will provide you with meaningful suggestions and activities around intergenerational activism you can use in your programs. Read the guide, talk it over with older and younger people, and commit to do something grand the week of September 8-14.
Here are a few additional resources with ideas to get started:
- Tried and True: A Guide to Successful Intergenerational Activities at Shared Site Programs (pdf)
- The Legacy Project’s Grandparents Day Planning and Activity Guide
- Intergenerational Activities Sourcebook from Penn State
In addition, we encourage you to do something grand in October during Intergeneration Month.
Help Generations United Spread the Word About Grandparents Day
On September 8th, change your Facebook profile to a picture of your grandchildren, grandparents, or other important youth and older adults in your life. In your status update, encourage your friends to Do Something Grand with a link to our site.
Here’s a sample message you can use:
In honor of Grandparents Day, I changed my cover photo. Join me and change your photo to one that celebrates grandparents. Happy Grandparents Day to all the incredible grandparents out there!
Also, encourage and help the youth and adults you work with to do the same.
